The concept of mobility hubs – Characteristics and Typology of Mobility Hubs in MED areas

This report has been developed as part of the GREENMO project and focuses on the six Mediterranean partner countries: Greece, Spain, Italy, Malta, Cyprus and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It explains the concept of mobility hubs, their typology (urban, suburban, rural), benefits (environmental, socio-economic, accessibility), stakeholder involvement, current status in the six Mediterranean partner countries, and provides examples (Athens, Barcelona, Milan, Valletta, Nicosia, Sarajevo).

Thedocument addresses the lack of integrated, sustainable, and user-friendly public mobility solutions in Mediterranean cities and rural areas. Current mobility is marked by congestion, pollution, and high private car dependency, while shared and active mobility options remain fragmented and poorly connected. The concept of mobility hubs is proposed as a solution to centralise diverse transport modes, improve first- and last-mile connectivity, and integrate services physically and digitally. The document highlights the absence of branded hubs in partner countries and the barriers to their implementation, aiming to raise awareness and provide guidance for future development.
The document has good transfer and adaptability potential, as the concept of mobility hubs is flexible and can be tailored to urban, suburban, and rural contexts across the MED area. Its clear typology and stakeholder mapping make it relevant for different territorial settings. However, implementation requires strong governance frameworks, publicu2013private collaboration, harmonized policies, and integrated digital solutions. Adequate infrastructure investments, citizen engagement, and awareness-raising are also necessary to ensure acceptance, replicability, and long-term sustainability of mobility hubs.
The document adds value by contextualizing the concept of mobility hubs within the Mediterranean area, where no officially branded hubs currently exist. It goes beyond existing transport nodes (e.g., stations, park-and-ride) by outlining how hubs can integrate multiple transport modes, shared mobility, active mobility, and related services into a seamless, user-centered system. It also identifies barriers specific to the region, maps examples from partner countries, and highlights the governance, stakeholder collaboration, and digital integration required. This localized, practice-oriented perspective provides a foundation for advancing mobility hubs in MED contexts.
