Issues addressed

Marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean are increasingly threatened by climate change, but many lack effective tools and strategies for adaptation. Despite existing research and protocols, managers still struggle to implement integrated, climate-resilient measures. This output, developed by the MPA4Change project, addresses the urgent need for harmonised, science-based and participatory tools to support MPAs in adapting to and mitigating climate-related impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Added value of the result

The output builds on existing MPA tools and protocols and introduces refined, regionally adapted and interdisciplinary solutions. It integrates scientific monitoring, stakeholder participation, citizen science and restoration practices. It addresses gaps in implementation and promotes inclusive, scalable and transferable approaches to climate adaptation in MPAs.

Transferability potential

The output is highly transferable within the Mediterranean region and beyond. Successful implementation requires basic technical capacities, stakeholder coordination and digital access to common platforms. The involvement of trained local actors, integration into MPA management plans and institutional support are key for broad acceptance and long-term sustainability.
