Data collection and processing methodology for wildfire prevention and mitigation

The FRED project focuses on preventing and mitigating climate change impacts in the form of wildfires, using advanced technologies. It develops this methodology for data collection and processing for wildfire prevention and mitigation addressing the data typology, sources and methods for data processing. This methodology was jointly developed by all partners from 7 countries from the Euro-MED cooperation area.

The methodology addresses the lack of a common framework for wildfire risk management across Mediterranean countries. Differences in data collection, processing, and operational practices have limited the ability to coordinate responses and share practical tools. It identifies how to tackle those challenges by providing a standardised methodology that improves interoperability, scalability, and cross-border transfer of practices. It strengthens regional capacity to anticipate, respond to, and mitigate wildfire events, while enhancing operational effectiveness in wildfire suppression.
Unlike existing fragmented approaches, this framework harmonises data collection, processing, and operational deployment, ensuring interoperability and cross-border scalability. It provides a shared methodology tailored to wildfire management across seven Mediterranean countries.nThis methodology bridges gaps between national practices, enabling practical tools to be transferred regionally. By fostering collaboration and standardisation, it enhances collective preparedness, improves suppression capacity and creates a stronger, more resilient response to wildfire risks.
The methodology has high transfer and adaptability potential, as it is designed to be scalable across Mediterranean countries and replicable in other fire-prone regions. Its standardised framework ensures interoperability and facilitates knowledge exchange, making it suitable for diverse national contexts. For successful implementation, political commitment, institutional alignment and investment in training, data integration, and operational tools are required. Strong cross-border collaboration and continuous capacity building will ensure long-term effectiveness and impact.
